Detector identification by waveform shape analysis for effective data acquisition; Improvements in time resolution and count rate for positron annihilation age-momentum correlation measurement

Hirade, Tetsuya; Ando, Hirokazu*; Manabe, Kensuke*; Ueda, Daisuke*

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A, 931, p.100 - 104, 2019/07

 Times Cited Count:8 Percentile:65.94(Instruments & Instrumentation)

A detector identification method using waveform-shape analysis is proposed. A method for enabling discrimination of detectors by making a characteristic waveform shape for every detector by each own loop circuit on the detector is shown as an example. This method can be applied in many experimental contexts with detectors, making a high counting rate possible. Moreover, detector identification can be used for other important questions such as detector position. As an example, this detector identification method is used to perform positron-annihilation age-momentum correlation measurement with a high temporal resolution and a high counting rate.

Monitoring of tritium in diluted gases by detecting bremsstrahlung X-rays

Fusion Engineering and Design, 81(1-7), p.803 - 808, 2006/02

In this work, the counting rate of bremsstrahlung X-rays was measured against the tritium partial pressure in two mixed gases diluted with helium or hydrogen. Subsequently, the counting rate was also measured against total pressure for T$$_{2}$$-He mixture at a constant tritium partial pressure of 93 Pa or 1.3 kPa. For both mixtures, the counting rate of bremsstrahlung X-rays decreased linearly with the decreasing tritium partial pressure when the total pressure is smaller than about 10 kPa. At higher pressures, the deviation from the linear relationship appeared due to absorption of beta-particles in the gas phase, and this can be decreased by some commercially available arrangements. On the other hand, the counting rate of bremsstrahlung X-rays depended only upon the tritium partial pressure when absorption of beta-particles in the gas phase is negligibly small. The results obtained show that this method of tritium monitoring is very promising for the fuel processing system of fusion reactors, especially for tritium recovery system of breeding blankets.

Effective multiplication factor measurement by Feynman-$alpha method (3)

Mori, Tomoaki;

PNC-TN9410-98-056.pdf:1.98MB

The sub-criticality monitoring system has been developed for criticality safety control in nuclear fuel handling plants. In the past experiments performed with the Deuterium Critical Assembly(DCA), it was confirmed that the detection of sub-criticality was possible to k$$_{eff}$$=0.3. To investigate the applicability of the method to more generalized system, experiments were performed in the light-water-moderated system of the modified DCA core. From these experiments, it was confirmed that the prompt decay constant($$alpha$$), which was a index of the sub-criticality, was detected between k$$_{eff}$$=0.623 and k$$_{eff}$$ 0.870 and the difference of 0.05$$sim$$0.1$$Delta$$k could be distinguished. The $$alpha$$ values were numerically calculated with 2D transport code TWODANT and monte carlo code KENO V.a, and the results were compared with the measured values. The differences between calculated and measured values were proved to be less than 13%, which was sufficient accuracy in the sub-criticality monitoring system. It was confirmed that Feynman-$$alpha$$ method was applicable to sub-critical measurement of the light-water-moderated system.

Report on result of special test of Fast Experimental Reactor "JOYO"; Reactor start-up test vithout external neutron source

Sasaki, Makoto

PNC TN941 82-56, 106 Pages, 1982/03

PNC-TN941-82-56.pdf:3.8MB

A 3 pcs criterion of the neutron start-up monitor at the reactor start-up is set up in order to protect the reactivity accident at the reactor start-up and confirm the normal motion of the monitor. Fast Experimental Reactor "JOYO" has one external neutron source (Sb-Be) in the core region to meet this criterion. However, the 3 cps criterion is not met after long reactor outage, because the half life time of the external neutron source is about only 2 months. In addition, the external neutron source is irradiated by another reactor before beeing put into use. Therefore, it is very convinient if the reactor can start-up without the external neutron source since in this case various potential troubles are avoided. This report describes the start-up experiment without the external neutron source in "JOYO" MK-I core. The results are as followings: (1)The reactor was able to start-u without the external neutron source. (2)The reactor was start-up due to inner neutron of the driven fuels. (3)The reactor may be able to start-up vithout the external neutron source in "JOYO" MK-II core, too.

Oral presentation

New method for high counting rate of positron annihilation age-momentum correlation (AMOC) measurement

Hirade, Tetsuya; Ando, Hirokazu*; Manabe, Kensuke*; Ueda, Daisuke*

no journal, ,

Although positron annihilation $$gamma$$ ray age-momentum correlation (AMOC) measurements can give information that cannot be obtained by other methods, it takes a long time to measure. The time resolution and the counting rate are in a trade-off relationship. We tried to improve the counting rate by increasing detectors. If the position of the detector deviates by 1 mm, it shifts 3 ps on the time axis. Even if multiple detectors are introduced, it is very difficult to match the time information obtained by each detector. Therefore, we have introduced each characteristic waveform to the signal from every detector. It was possible to identify a detector by use of a characteristic shape of waveforms, i.e. every spectrum for each detectors can be obtained. Afterward, every time shift for each spectrum can be calculated and then finally all of the events can be analyzed by correcting time shifts to construct one spectrum. Hence we succeeded to perform high count rate AMOC measurements.
